“The Past”
Several years ago, Pine Grove Zoo was a drive-by zoo that had very little educational impact and even less community support. The animals were housed in small, cramped, concrete cages that provided little exercise and no room for their natural behaviors to be observed. There seemed to be no hope for the future.
In 1991, a dedicated group of volunteers was formed whose sole purpose was to change the perception of the Zoo, in addition to help in creating natural, spacious habitats for each Zoo inhabitant. This group’s focus and goals have evolved, but the intent has never faltered. Their steadfast idea that a group of dedicated people, working together as a team, can indeed change a piece of one’s world, has become a reality.
“The Present”
This group’s tireless, unwavering, innovative spirit has been one of the largest reasons the Pine Grove Zoo has developed into a progressive zoological park. A long awaited goal of the Pine Grove Zoo is to become an AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited institution. Why become AZA accredited? Here are just a couple…
- It is a publicly recognized badge signifying excellence in, and commitment to, collection management, veterinary care, ethics, physical facilities, staffing, conservation, education, safety and security, and finance. As well, as eligibility for grants only provided to AZA facilities.
- Ability to acquire more exotic species of animals, therefore, increasing zoo attendance.
“The Future”
After a very thorough, unbiased inspection of every aspect of our Zoo, policies, and safety procedures, there were a few physical items they felt needed to be improved to obtain the level of standards needed for accreditation.
